Incorrigible Defense (The Seven Habits of Highly Annoying Christians Part 3)
Many well meaning Christians, even those who have a fairly good grasp of Scripture, often try to defend their faith with what is rightfully called, Incorrigible truth. It is a claim or claims, which by definition cannot be corrected or falsified. Let me give you an example from the world of construction which I had happen years ago. I had built a suite of offices in Chicago. In this particular project one of the requirements was that we had the thermostats calibrated and the supply and return air ducts tested and balanced. We also had to check the relative humidity. All was completed and the reports submitted and accepted. The offices were then occupied. On one side of the space was a row of about 10 offices which were staffed by females. I am not certain gender was involved but it is at least possible. Continue reading …
Parasitic Evangelism (The Seven Habits of Highly Annoying Christians Part 2)
Our second highly annoying habit is one that belongs almost exclusively to evangelicals. I don’t really know who thought up the idea of parody t-shirts but they should be subject to some serious church discipline. I really seriously defy anyone to look at this list of the worst Christian t-shirts and tell me how they are more effective at spreading the Gospel than simply having a conversation with someone about their understanding of Jesus. Maybe (and its a “big” maybe) there is someone who saw someone sporting what, from a distance, looked like a a cool Abercrombie and Fitch t-shirt and thought, Continue reading …
Dropping the F-Bomb (Part 1 of the Seven Habits of Highly Annoying Christians)
I begin a series today about seven very annoying things Christians do. I’m taking my cue from Jon Acuff’s very funny and thought-provoking blog Stuff Christians Like. We begin with those Christians who drop the F-bomb.
Relax not that F-bomb though I’m sure that F-bomb gets dropped by more neo-evangelicals in ripped jeans and soul patches under the rationalization that they are “keepin it realz” than we would like to admit. No the F-bomb to which I’m referring is a very nasty use of the concept of “faith.” In order to correct someone (out of nothing but love of course!) one questions someone’s faith in God to do whatever. To whit–”You just don’t seem to have enough faith.” Some of you dear readers have been on the receiving in of that particular piece of holy ordinance and are nodding your heads. Don’t nod too hard cause chances are you’ve fired one off without realizing yourself. Continue reading …
Abandoning Israel
In the heat of election season the conventions of each major party reveals what they stand for in their “planks.” The Republicans have vowed fiscal conservatism and although they tend to be pro-life and in favor of traditional marriage they are also saying they are not addressing moral but economic issues in this election. The Democrat Party on the other hand have moral issues as a part of their platform. Abortion on demand, abortifacients included in all insurance plans, normalizing same sex marriage and a variety of other issues of moral significance. Quite a flap was raised when it was realized that all mentions of God were removed from the Democrat platform. U.S. Democratic Party removes reference to Jerusalem as Israel’s capital from official platform made quite the headline. Continue reading …
