Guard the Flock
From time to time we are MCOI have to stop to reminder ourselves why we are doing what we do. I am particularly reminded when I receive from pastors which say:
Stop attacking everyone! LOVE LOVE LOVE … do you actually ingest the WORD when you read it or is it just a judgement stick for you against all the evil people in the world. You should learn caution against such things you don’t absolutely know. Your anthropomorphistic rhetoric falls apart if you play it out all the way. Maybe Jesus wasn’t really a man maybe the gospels like the rest of the OT is just one giant anthropomorphism
Other times it comes in the form of responses on the blog from Continue reading …
Rick Warren, Hinduism, Diets and Doctrinal Famine
Last week I have a response to the blog we had done in October of 2007, My Yoga is Easy: Hinduization of Christianity. The initial comment, (dated January 16, 2011) wondered why we, if we have Christ, we would be so afraid. I was able to respond *the following response) that fear had nothing to do with it but safety warnings are important. While this was transpiring I received the news that Rick Warren had started a new program, the Daniel Plan, with Swedenborgian Dr. Oz, Dr. Daniel Amen and others. According to Continue reading …
Mark Twain and the Constitution, Politically Incorrect?
Being a student of history, I enjoy reading books, articles, poems and speeches, even technical works, in their historical/grammatical setting. This is true of the Bible as well as other historical works. Doing so gives me a real view into the lives and thinking of folks of yester year. Joy and I have spent a fair amount of time over the years going to Civil War battlefields and reading notes and letters from soldiers on both sides of that terrible conflict. How very human they were and befuddled about the obstinance of those on the other side. The commander of the Army of the Potomac, General George B. McClellan, held a low view of President Abraham Lincoln, referring to him as a baboon. Although McClellan was outstanding at training and preparing an army, he was fairly worthless as far as actually taking an army into battle. He was frozen into inaction by always believing he was outmanned by the other side. At one point, Lincoln sent him a note saying along the lines of: Continue reading …
Was Jesus into Social Justice Part II
Since, the holidays are over and school is about to reconvene, I am (to put it mildly) busier than a one-legged man in a butt kicking contest as we say in Mississippi. However, I wanted to revisit the discussion about Jesus and Social justice because we got such interesting responses. One good comment was about Christians who claim to be Communists or at least Marxists:
One teaching of Communism is that communism is completely anti-religious. Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin, extreme Communists, both spoke out against religion altogether in rise of Communism. If Communism preaches against religion altogether, why would Jesus be a Communist? Doesn’t make sense for anyone to say that or think that if they any Biblical knowledge at all.
This is an important point. Can one be a communist without being an Atheist? Continue reading …
